Colors of the Arroyo (at Plant Material) – February 25, 2024

$85.00

Join me for a natural dye workshop and plant walk exploring local ecology, plant dyes, and responsible wild-harvesting at Plant Material at their beautiful Arroyo-adjacent Altadena location.

We’ll start our day with a plant walk/hike from Plant Material to the Arroyo Seco, where we’ll get acquainted with our local ecology and flora—including plants with natural dye properties, their stories and science, ethnobotanical relationships, and more—and gently gather plants with dye potential to use in creating unique eco-prints featuring colors of the Arroyo.

You’ll learn about the abundant, color-potent native and non-native plants growing around us, how to work with them as dyes in varying capacities, and when and how to responsibly harvest them (or grow them yourself in any garden setting—including in containers, like I do). Leave with inspiration, knowledge, and recipes for working with plant color from our local biome, and a one-of-a-kind wearable print featuring colors from plants nourished by recent rains and collected in situ.

Bring a basket for harvesting, wear comfortable shoes and clothing, and pack a lunch (or grab a bite nearby during our mid-day break). We’ll hike 1-2 miles in the first half of class, break for lunch, and then work together with our collected plants during the second half of class.

Come gather, connect, and create with your local plant-loving community on Sunday, February 25, 10am-2pm. Details will be sent to attendees via email on the week leading up to the walk, so please ensure your email address is correct when checking out.
